The financial world is in the middle of a famous credit crunch, lenders are going out of business each and every day, credit is now so much harder to obtain, could this be the time to start thinking about consolidating your debts? What are the pros and cons of debt consolidation? Is debt consolidation just another scam or can it be of benefit to people? I will be attempting to answer these questions in this article.

Yes it is now becoming very hard to borrow money. So what is debt consolidation? How does it work? Debt consolidation is marketed as a way to put all of your debts under one so called umbrella, thus enabling you to manage the debt easier, the repayment should, so the adverts say, be less than what you are paying currently. Is this the case?

Each and every individual's circumstance is different. The simple answer is that debt consolidation can be of benefit to some but not to others. Before entering into any agreement a person should read all of the conditions very carefully especially the small print. Where a person is not financially intelligent or in the case of a large debt I personally would advise people to seek specialist debt reduction advice, this advice may not come cheaply but could save you thousands in the long run.

A person who has four or five loans or credit cards may be finding it quite difficult to juggle all of their repayments. All of the different interest rates that they are paying can also be tricky to keep in charge of, especially with the lenders constantly changing the rates that they charge. To consolidate all of these debts into one monthly repayment at a lower rate would without doubt be prudent.

Even though house prices are currently falling, many people have a substantial amount of equity in their houses due to the large house price rises over the last decade. Releasing some of this equity to pay off some or all of the debts has become a popular choice for many.

As already stated each case is different therefore be sure to think carefully before deciding on any form of debt consolidation.
